U.S. citizens sometimes encounter emergency financial difficulties while traveling abroad due to theft or unexpected circumstances. In most cases, family, friends, or business owners can transfer money directly to U.S. citizens abroad through Western Union, Money Gram, or similar commercial money transfer services with offices abroad.
In the event of an emergency, if no alternative means of commercial service is available, the Embassy or Consulate General will be able to assist in receiving and returning funds to U.S. citizens from family or friends submitted through the U.S. Department of State’s U.S. Citizens Abroad Service.
